Johnson County Social Organizations Welcome New Members

The Johnson County Homemakers, under the auspices of the U. of I. Extension Service, have several units in various communities. Each unit meets monthly, usually at a member’s home, with a program or demonstration on an interesting and useful subject.

The Homemakers are very involved in the community, hold educational and cultural programs for the public, provide trips to unique locales, and offer a social outlet.

The Daniel Chapman Chapter National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of their chapter in October at a special gathering. Any woman is welcome to joining, after showing proof of being in the genealogical lineage of a Revolutionary War soldier. Assistance is offered with the family research.

Meetings are held the second Monday of each month, September – June, at announced times and locations.
The society holds a number of patriotic events each year, that include the Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day events, on the library grounds, as well as other community events.

The Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society welcomes members from all over, with many members in other states. The group meets each third Sunday of the month, at the community room of the Carnegie Library in Vienna. An interesting program, with a guest speaker, is held at each meeting. Presently, society members and the community are compiling a history volume of the county, to be ready for the upcoming county bicentennial in 2012.

Goreville Progressive Women’s Club was founded in the late 1940s, sponsored by an older organization, Goreville Women’s Club. The older club no longer exists, and the present club has taken that name. The club’s mission is: “To promote educational and recreational projects, and the social welfare of this community.” The club participates in community activities and offers an annual scholarship to a Goreville High School senior.

The club meets each second Tuesday, usually at a member’s home, September - May. Billie Case is the current president and can be reached at 618-995-9783.

Pond Community Club is probably the oldest social club in the county, organized over ninety years ago as a sewing club in the Pond Community. The ladies now meet monthly, for lunch at either an area restaurant or in a member’s home. The gather at 11:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and enjoy an afternoon of activities. They welcome members from any community.

Johnson County Woman’s Club, originally named the Vienna Woman’s Club in 1896, was renamed in 2006.

Members meet the first Friday of the month, October – December and February – May, at 1:30 p.m. at various locations.
Programs are varied, with music, art and literature as frequent subjects. Guests and new members are welcome.

The club has a tradition of community services and donates to a number of projects including a scholarship to a Vienna High School senior.

H.U.G.S. “Helping Under God’s Service”, is not church-affiliated, although the members meet at the First Christian Church basement. The organization meets each fourth Monday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to create crafts. These are donated to the needy or used as fundraisers for a cause.

There are no officers, minutes, or business meetings.
